Dive Sites

Home to the world’s second largest barrier reef, Roatan, Honduras is justifiably one of the top scuba diving and snorkeling destinations on earth. CoCo View Resort has the reputation for being the easiest place to dive on the island. Everything we do at the resort is done with the intention of making your dives safe and comfortable.

The majority of the dive sites we visit are within a 10-minute boat ride!

Dive with Roatan’s sea turtles, dolphins, tropical fish, eels, sharks, and more as you explore the island’s best dive sites with CoCo View. Descend massive thousand-foot coral walls, investigate old wrecks, swim through deep channels and caverns, or visit an eel garden. With well over 150 dive sites around the island, plus CoCo View’s own “Front Yard,” there’s certainly no diving shortage here, and you can visit a new site on each trip out.

Some of the island’s most popular dive sites include:

Anka’s Place: Moored in 20 feet, a very shallow meandering wall with cascading corals and magnificent rope, tube, and barrel sponges. This site is also where you can see where a large section of the reef has fallen off and into the deep from the last major earthquake in 2009.

Calvin’s Crack: Calvin’s Crack is one of the most popular Roatán dive sites. Located on the east side of the island, Calvin’s Crack attracts divers from all over the world. This elbow shaped plateau can be found out in Jonesville, with a buoy that is attached at 30 ft. Volcanic activity in this area created a long crevice for which this site is named. This crack starts at 30 ft and ends at 80 ft where it exits to the wall face. Divers normally begin this dive by entering the crevice and following it through while enjoying the abundant marine life attached to its walls.

Carib Point: The currents here have made it an ideal spot for deep water sea fans to thrive, and the actual quantity that resides here is impressive. You will find a large concentration of creolle wrasse, blue chromis, yellowtail snapper and black durgeon. The upper part of the reef wall is a slightly inclined plateau with depths between 30 and 40 ft.

Castle Canyon: Moored in 20 feet. The reef top is shallow, yet thick, with lush covered points displaying sponges and gorgonian.

Chimney’s: Moored in 25 feet, this site offers a shallow top with sand patches and large coral boulders that reach to within 5 feet of the surface. The wall is steep and dramatic when it drops off.

CoCo View Wall: The reef top at this wall is thickly covered with lettuce, staghorn, and elkhorn corals. Keep your eyes open for the resident green moray eel, often found swimming from CoCo View Wall to the Wreck of the Prince Albert. The shallow top, with its cleaning stations, can offer hours of entertainment as you watch the variety of marine life come and go.

Doc’s Retreat: Moored in 20 feet. The reef top is populated with very healthy hard and soft corals, a series of sand chutes, and mounds of hard coral.

French Cay Cut: Moored in 20 feet, this Roatan snorkel site offers a sandy basin with shallow corals leading to the cut. This is a very shallow wall top lined with mounds of star and elkhorn corals.

Gold Chain Reef: Moored in 25 feet; the reef top ranges from 10-30 feet. This is a sloping wall fingering out to a large sand slope. The wall top is thickly populated with elkhorn, staghorn, and lettuce corals. Keep an eye out for surge on this reef top.

Inside Outside: Moored in 25 feet. The edge is prolific with lettuce coral and deep narrow cuts. Corals reach within 5-10 feet of the surface.

John’s Spot Coral ridges form the upper reef and guide the way to the wall’s edge at 40 ft. It has a shallow top with dense hard corals. There is a very straight steep wall that is covered with sponges and ends at a sandy channel. Huge sponges make the overhangs beautiful and marine growth moves in the currents as the sheer descent reaches depths well beyond recreational limits.

Little French Cay: The reef top ranges from 25-30 feet. Lush out-croppings with several sets of overhangs are thickly populated with hard corals.

Mary’s Place: Voted as one of the “Best Dive Sites” by Scuba Diving Magazine‘s 2018 Readers’ Choice Awards. Mary’s Place is one of Roatan’s most famous dive sites. It is a plateau in the form of an elbow that descends gradually from the buoy anchor at 30 ft, down to the southernmost point at 60 ft. Impressive vertical reef walls surround the plateau and go as deep as 120 ft where the sandy bottom continues its descent to beyond recreational dive limits. What makes this site a favorite among divers is its complex system of deep crevices that cut through the plateau.

Menagerhea’s Reef: The mooring is in about 20 ft of water in a sand patch that leads to the wall. The wall is constructed of overhangs and ledges set deep behind sheet corals that are draped with rope sponges and soft corals. The gently forms a point at 50 ft marked by a sand chute and two large sponges overlooking lush growth and feeding fish. This is a beautiful wall at any depth and the panorama is awesome.

Missing Link: Moored in 20 feet; the reef top ranges from 20-30 feet. Large mounds and hedges of hard corals cut to the edge of the reef top, with the wall dropping off to 80 feet. Watch for schooling fish on this site.

Mr. Bud Wreck: The wreck of the Mr. Bud sits at a depth of approximately 60 feet surrounded by sand flats filled with jawfish. The buoy line at this site leads you down 60 ft to the stern of the sunken cargo ship called Mr. Bud. While the deepest part of this wreck sits at t60 ft, the roof of its cabin reaches to a depth of 45 ft. The bow of the ship lies wedged within the reef directly in front of the upper wall at 50 ft. You will see some very large colonies of sea plume, and you just might find a seahorse hiding itself among the soft coral or sponges.

Neverstain Bight: This snorkeling site offers a shallow wall top with prolific coral life and an abundance of marine life visiting the cleaning stations.

Newman’s Wall: This wall is well worth the extra effort of crossing the channel on a calm day. There are lots of long sand chutes on the top of the wall and spectacular vertical walls. The top is covered lots of coral including soft corals and sea fans.

Parrot Tree: The reef top ranges from 10-20 feet and is covered with lettuce, staghorn, and elkhorn, forming hedges separated by deep cuts. There are dramatic ledges and overhangs at this site.

Patty’s Paradise This is a very special site presented in July 2019 by CoCo View Resort to one of our very own, Patty Grier. This site is in recognition and appreciation of her outstanding service, devotion and enthusiasm for the scuba diving community. The mooring is in 40 ft of water at a sand chute. Following the steep wall, you will see tube sponges and a rich outcropping reef ledge on the wall.

Two Tall Two Small: Moored in 20 feet, this site offers a shallow wall with a sloping bottom. Gorgeous sea fans top the edge of the wall. Watch for east/west surge.

Wreck of the Prince Albert: CoCo View’s own wreck, sitting upright in 65 feet of water, just a few fin kicks from the resort. This site is located right in front of CoCo View and is our most popular shore dive and night dive. She is a 140’ long freighter that was sunk over 25 years ago with a beautiful soft coral forest on the bow and aft decks. She has been modified for easy entrance for divers. At certain times of the year, 100% of the wreck’s 140 foot length can be visible from a surface snorkel. Extensive coral growth almost completely covers the wreck, and eagle rays, southern sting rays, and squid often pass alongside. This wreck is also a popular night dive.
