Lion Fish Hunting

Lion fish are an invasive species of fish that are plaguing the waters of the Caribbean and elsewhere. At CoCo View Resort, we are partnering with other organizations to do our part in eradicating them from the ocean

At CoCo View Resort, we are promoting the harvest and consumption of lionfish in efforts to prevent further increases of this invasive species. We are working to combat the invasion of the lionfish. To this end, we have partnered with the Roatan Marine Park to offer lionfish workshops to teach guests how to properly spear lionfish using a Hawaiian sling style spear.

This workshop is a 30-minute course followed by a 30-minute in water training session with your spear. The Roatan Marine Park provides a mandatory informational video that participants watch prior to attending the workshop. The price of the course is $30 if you already have your own Hawaiian sling style spear, or $60 for the course and the spear. Immediately after completing the workshop you will be given your license and spear to begin hunting lionfish.

Spearfishing in a marine-protected area is illegal in Honduras. However, with a Roatan Marine Park-issued Bay Islands Lionfish Spearing License, visiting and local divers and free divers are legally allowed to use a Hawaiian sling or pole spear of up to 3 feet, only to hunt lionfish.

We offer east end/west end all-day boat trips where you can hunt lionfish in addition to access to hunt from shore and on your daily boat dives. Once you have had a successful day of lionfish hunting, the dive masters will then remove the venomous spines. After the fish have been properly cleaned and the venomous spines have been removed, the kitchen staff will safely prepare your lionfish however you would like. They are a delicious tasting fish making for great appetizers and meals.
